Red Spider Lily Bulbs

On sale March through mid-August during Bookshop hours.

Our Red Spider Lily Bulbs are for sale seasonally until sold out. The Lycoris Radiata (The Red Spider Lily) was first grown in the United States in Willington, South Carolina.

Dr. James Morrow, a physician and horticulturalist, was living at Pleasant Grove in Willington when he was asked by the US Government to accompany Commodore Matthew Perry on his first expedition to open up trade with Japan in 1853. The expedition returned with rare and interesting plants.

Dr. Morrow brought Lycoris Radiata bulbs back with him and planted them in Willington. Since then, the bulbs have spread widely throughout the South. The bulbs may bloom anytime from late August through October.
